Why most chains aren't cosy (the data)

Cosiness is warmth, intimacy and character: the things that come from a small place with a point of view. A chain's whole advantage is the opposite: consistency at scale. A room that's identical in 400 cities is reassuring, but it can't surprise you, and surprise is half of character.

That's why chains barely register in the cosy world at all. Of every hotel we've scored, only a few hundred carry a big-brand name, and as a group they sit more than a full point below independents.
